Lonesome George has passed away. He was the last of his sub-species, the Galapagos Tortoise. Sorry we failed you buddy.

Can we please have a moment of silence for Lonesome George and the fact A FRIKEN SUB-SPECIES has become extinct. Also, a moment to reflect on all the other species/sub-species that have become extinct. 

Fuck, I actually feel really sad.

As much as it saddened me when I heard about this, since I’ve known about Lonesome George since I was a kid, this is not the reason I’m reblogging.

Galápagos tortoise is not a subespecies; the Pinta Island tortoise is (or was) a subespecies of the Galápagos tortoise. There are still 10 subespecies of Galápagos tortoises, all threatened, but there are conservation funds to which you can donate, such as the Galápagos Conservation Trust or the Turtle Conservation Fund which aim to protect other threatened species of turtles.
